Mokumeganeya is a leading company in jewelry production using mokume gane, a traditional Japanese technique that has been passed down since the Edo period. We believe that by utilizing this traditional technology, which was once considered a legendary technique, in the modern age as an industry and presenting it to the world as a shining presence, it will lead to the development of Japanese culture and industry and the creation of a happy society.

Mokumeganeya's "Tsunagaru-katachi" was the first wedding ring in Japan to receive the Good Design Award (Japan). It also won the "Red Dot Design Award (Germany)" and the "iF Design Award (Germany)", two of the world's top three design awards, and was selected as a finalist for the "IDEA Design Award (US)". It also received the "German Design Award 2020" (Germany), also known as "the award of all awards".

The Edo Tokyo Kirari Project is promoted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Mokumeganeya has been selected as one of the model companies that are making attractive initiatives that will lead the establishment of a Tokyo brand that will spread its wings to the world. Our efforts to develop and introduce to the world the modern wedding ring "Tsunagaru-katachi" using the traditional "mokume gane" technique from the Edo period were highly regarded as an initiative full of the charms of "tradition" and "innovation". Mokumeganeya will continue to represent Tokyo as a leading company, offering innovative products to the world using traditional techniques.

Tokyo's Edo Tokyo Kirari Project EDO TOKYO RETHINK

The Edo Tokyo Kirari Project aims to enhance the skills and improve products rooted in the traditions of Edo Tokyo from a new perspective and reach out to the world. Noritaka Tatehana, a contemporary artist who plays an active role in the field of contemporary art, both domestically and internationally,has been invited as the exhibition director. “Edo Tokyo Rethink -The Future of Traditional Industry Seen Through Art at the Kyu-Iwasaki-tei Gardens-” is now on view on this special website. The exhibition features traditional industry businesses in Tokyo as the collaborator of Noritaka Tatehana.The question, “What should be expressed by reviewing the ancient traditional culture of Japan?”, is the main theme of “Rethink” which is Noritaka Tatehana’s creation process. To launch out, “Rethink” proposes a new form of value and attractiveness of traditional industries.

Collaboration Work

Collaboration with Contemporary Artist Noritaka Tatehana

In collaboration with contemporary artist Noritaka Tatehana, we produced and exhibited the zipper fasteners using the mokume gane technique for shoes designed by Tatehana at the "Edo Tokyo Rethink" hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Tatehana's shoes are displayed as part of the permanent collections of prominent museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. They are also famous for being worn by Lady Gaga.

Luxury watch brand <Credor> x Mokumeganeya #1

Mokumeganeya and Credor, the luxury watch brand of Seiko Watch Corporation, collaborated to produce a commemorative model for the 45th anniversary of the brand's founding, which depicts a traditional Japanese landscape of "ears of rice fluttering in the wind" using the traditional mokume gane technique on the dial, with 35 pieces of the limited edition watch sold at Credor stores nationwide in 2019. Luxury watch brand <Credor> x Mokumeganeya #2

After a successful collaboration between Mokumeganeya and Credor, the luxury watch brand of Seiko Watch Corporation, this marks the second collaboration between the two companies. This limited edition model depicts "Zui-un", an auspicious cloud that is said to represent good omens, on the dial using the traditional mokume gane technique. The watch was released in limited quantities in 2021 and is now on sale at Credor stores nationwide.

Promotional activities for mokume gane

Mokumegane Company has established the NPO Japan Mokumegane Research Institute, an institution for research and investigation of the traditional craft technique of mokume gane, and as a leading company that preserves valuable mokume gane pieces and produces jewelry utilizing its characteristics, we are passing on the traditional technique to the modern age as a living technique.
